We recruited two ACU students to finish digging, tilling, planting and mulching for us. Hallelujah! They finished the first flower bed pretty fast, but got burned out on the second one - the ground was hard; the grass too hard to dig out. So, they went to Lowe's and bought grass killer (much to my organic gardening mother's dismay, but she was so tired she didn't put up a fight).
In the midst of all this, the dog ate fire ant killer. Yes, yes he did! It was yellow and fluffy and he just couldn't resist having a few bites. The back of the bag said "harmful to domestic animals." It wasn't very specific as to how harmful, so I called the vet. They wanted to see him right away. As soon as we walked in and I slapped the bag of fire ant killer on the counter we were surrounded. One vet looked for the active ingredient, the other took Spencer to the back to "clear his system." The office internet was down, the vet actually drove all the way home (um, two blocks) to look up the toxicity of the poison. By the time he got back, the other vets had analyzed the contents of the dumb dog's stomach. I've never seen so much interest in pre-digested food...and dirt...and fire ant killer. It turned out that this poison was less harmful than the nitrates in the potting soil that he had also ingested. I guess it was worth $60 to make sure Spencer lives another day to eat something else disasterous. They remembered when I broght him in for eating a diaper - Ugh!
Here are the pictures:
The kids loved helping. They had their own gardening gloves and really had a great time.
Now, we just have to keep the plants alive and the weeds and grass out of the flower beds. Wish us luck!

I am very impressed! I don't think you've ever been to our house, but if you have, you will notice 'landscaping' being a definite need for us! All of our interior of our home has been done by natural disasters, but the outside? Not so much... We look around, think about how much work it is, and walk back inside and enjoy our disaster-remodeled home.
I am very thankful that Spencer has lived to tell about his landscaping experience.
Looking good!!! So when is the pool going in??? :)
So how did you know what to plant? I'd be clueless.
Looks good! Just be glad Spencer did that during vet hours...last weekend we had to take Dexter to the emergency vet b/c he decided it was time for the staples from his surgery to come out! Ouch!
